| Description | King George V and Albert I, King of Belgium, inspecting Belgian troops, France, during World War I. This image shows King Albert I and King George V inspecting a long line of Belgian troops. The troops are standing to attention with their rifles raised. One man holds a flag aloft. King Albert salutes the men as he marches past them. Both men are closely followed by a small entourage of uniformed men. The inspection is taking place along a wide path, possibly close to the seafront. Large houses, set back from the path, are visible on the right. In the early days of World War I, King Albert I took command of the Belgian armed forces. This was a reaction to the German threat of invasion in August 1914. Whilst Belgium was determined to maintain a neutral stance throughout the war, its strategic position between Germany and France resulted in a German invasion in the early days of the war.
