| Description | Portuguese in the trenches. Two soldiers are sitting side by side on a ledge in the mud. They are leaning up against ranch fencing supported by sandbags. They are surrounded by a confusing maze of sandbags and fencing all set in dusty, rocky ground. Both soldiers look relaxed with their legs stretched out in front of them and their uniforms undone. One soldier has a tin box balanced on his knee while he holds a letter. The other soldier is writing on a tiny sheet of paper. Both soldiers are intent on their letters. John Warwick Brooke is thought to have taken this personal photograph. Regardless of nationality most soldiers' experience of the Western Front would have been universal. Post was often intermittent and delayed. Despite this, this letter was perhaps a welcome relief with its news of home and family.
