| Description | YMCA tent at a show. The picture is taken in a grassy field which has small conifers dotted about in it. A huge tent is obscuring the rest of the background, although more tents are just visible through the lacing of the tent. Large flags of the Allied nations fly on the tent-ridge and in front of it. In front of the tent, five soldiers in different types and colours of uniform are posing for the camera. The Young Men's Christian Association was founded in 1844 by George William and a group of his friends. They started the group to help young men find God. Despite the religious aims of the group they soon became involved in all aspects of youth work and support services. | Description | Ernest Brooks was the first British official war photographer to be assigned to the Western Front in 1916. Previously a 'Daily Mirror' photographer, he was given the honorary rank of Second Lieutenant. His remit was to take as many photographs as possible, with as much variety as possible. Using his inconspicuous hand-held camera Brooks was free to wander, sometimes capturing his subjects unawares. Many of the images taken by Brooks were used to fuel the propaganda machine at home and abroad. Despite this Brooks, who was very aware of composition and light, produced some very artistic and thought-provoking images. |
