DescriptionSoldiers moving along a rough and dusty track, across open countryside. The area around the track is strewn with debris. According to the photograph's original caption this is the battlefield at Messines Ridge, Belgium. There are two horses, one rider less and heavily laden with arms or equipment. Two soldiers at the front, and two at the back, shoulder the weight of a container strapped to a long pole. In the distance two explosions are just visible. During the Battle of Messines Ridge (June 1917) the Allied forces, commanded by General Plumer, successfully captured the Ridge from the German Army. The offensive included the use of mines and tanks. [Original reads: 'GREAT BATTLE OF MESSINES RIDGE. - Scene on the battlefield.']

Ernest Brooks
DescriptionErnest Brooks was the first British official war photographer to be assigned to the Western Front in 1916. Previously a 'Daily Mirror' photographer, he was given the honorary rank of Second Lieutenant. His remit was to take as many photographs as possible, with as much variety as possible. Using his inconspicuous hand-held camera Brooks was free to wander, sometimes capturing his subjects unawares. Many of the images taken by Brooks were used to fuel the propaganda machine at home and abroad. Despite this Brooks, who was very aware of composition and light, produced some very artistic and thought-provoking images.
