| Description | This photograph was taken looking down what was once a road. The path of the road is still clearly visible, but it is now churned up, wet mud which is covered in potholes and stones. The roadway must have been partially eroded because the embankment on either side is very deep. It is composed of freshly churned mud. The trees on this embankment have had their roots exposed and are now lying at funny angles. They are also quite mutilated. Due to the devastation of the land which occurred in France during the war there were huge disruptions to transport network. Once peace had become a reality the improvement of this situation was a priority. | Description | Ernest Brooks was the first British official war photographer to be assigned to the Western Front in 1916. Previously a 'Daily Mirror' photographer, he was given the honorary rank of Second Lieutenant. His remit was to take as many photographs as possible, with as much variety as possible. Using his inconspicuous hand-held camera Brooks was free to wander, sometimes capturing his subjects unawares. Many of the images taken by Brooks were used to fuel the propaganda machine at home and abroad. Despite this Brooks, who was very aware of composition and light, produced some very artistic and thought-provoking images. |
