| Description | Two soldiers with their backs to the camera, are leaning up against the incline of the trench. The bottom of the trench is quite narrow and their equipment is lying to hand. They are peering over the top of the ridge and the sandbags which are slightly beneath the level of the ridge. The soldiers look pensive and alert and are fully equipped. The trench is very gravelly although the landscape in the background is a confusion of crossed, dead branches. The Battle of Thiepval Ridge was one of the shorter, location specific battles fought as part of the longer Somme Offense. It was fought on 25-27 September 1916 around the area of Thiepval Wood and was commanded by General Haig. | Description | Ernest Brooks was the first British official war photographer to be assigned to the Western Front in 1916. Previously a 'Daily Mirror' photographer, he was given the honorary rank of Second Lieutenant. His remit was to take as many photographs as possible, with as much variety as possible. Using his inconspicuous hand-held camera Brooks was free to wander, sometimes capturing his subjects unawares. Many of the images taken by Brooks were used to fuel the propaganda machine at home and abroad. Despite this Brooks, who was very aware of composition and light, produced some very artistic and thought-provoking images. |
