| Description | An abandoned field gun in Mametz Wood, France, during World War I. This image shows an abandoned field gun in Mametz Wood, France. According to the photograph's original caption it is a German gun. It is surrounded by small trees and broken branches, and lots of wire possibly belonging to a fence. It is very possible that the gun has been placed here to hide it from the advancing army. Often a retreating army would sabotage, or hide, any arms or equipment they were forced to leave behind, to prevent their own weapons being used against them. How thorough they were depended on how much time they had before retreating. [Original reads: 'German Field Gun in Mametz Wood.'] |

| Description | Ernest Brooks was the first British official war photographer to be assigned to the Western Front in 1916. Previously a 'Daily Mirror' photographer, he was given the honorary rank of Second Lieutenant. His remit was to take as many photographs as possible, with as much variety as possible. Using his inconspicuous hand-held camera Brooks was free to wander, sometimes capturing his subjects unawares. Many of the images taken by Brooks were used to fuel the propaganda machine at home and abroad. Despite this Brooks, who was very aware of composition and light, produced some very artistic and thought-provoking images. |
