| Description | Long line of women, all wearing hats and long overcoats, standing outside a large, rather grand building. According to the photograph's original caption they are awaiting the arrival of Queen Mary. Most of them are looking at the camera, and they are all smiling as they anxiously await the arrival of the Queen. Traditionally, nursing was the only possible avenue for women wanting to play an active role in war. World War I was the first to give women the opportunity to take on a number of different roles including; administrative work, cooking, driving, repair work, telephonist and telegraphist.
