Wednesday, 9th May—9.30 a.m. to 11.15 a.m.
Marks may be deducted for bad spelling and bad
punctuation, and for writing that is difficult to read.
The value attached to each question is shown in
brackets after the question.
SECTION A—COMPOSITION
Choose one of the following subjects. On any subject chosen from (a) to (e),
write a composition of two to three foolscap pages in length, with an
appropriate title at the beginning. If you choose subject (/), devote
about one page to each part of the exercise.
(a) An account of your experiences, real or imagined, when you have been
engaged on one of the following:—
bird-watching; bargain-hunting; hill-walking; fishing; “ messing
about in boats ”.
(b) If you could take a friend from abroad to two places or two events that
are typical of Scotland, which would you choose and why ?
(c) A short story entitled, “ Fire! Fire! ”
(d) An article for your school or college magazine, describing an outstanding
event in the school year.
(e) “ My Next Two Years.” What do you hope to achieve in that time ?
(/) Describe as clearly as you can
(i) how any one of the following works:—
an electric kettle; a washing machine; a carpet-sweeper; a vacuum
flask; a convector heater.
and
(ii) how you would use any one of the following:—
a power-lathe; a comptometer; an electric drill; a duplicating
machine; a sewing machine. (30)
