The immutable confonants, /, «, r, when
initials of words not conneded with others in
a fentence, have a foft double found, to be
learned only by the ear. But wherever the
order of conftruftion requires that the mutable
confonants fliould be afpirated, the immutable
lofe their double found, and are pronounced
nearly as in Englilh. Thus, the initial letters
of the adjectives mor great, and luath fwjft,
when joined with feminine fubflantives in the
nominative fingular, muft be founded like i)
and /in Englifli ; as, heinn mhar [vòr) a great
mountain, cos luath a fwift foot. But with
mafculine fubflantives they retain their primi-
tive found, as fear mor a great man, cù luath
{J luath') a fwift dog.
When the confonants /, w, r, have their
double found in the middle or end of words,
they are written double, as in G/z// a. foreigner,
fearr better ; and no other confonant in thia
language is ever written double.
