614 GAELIC IRREGULAR VERBS.
The past tense, Assertive — dependent, is the same as the inde-
pendent tense : Gum hu mhor — That it was great. The Existential
Past, independent, is hha (was), Old Irish h6i, hcU, hui, from a
Celtic perfect Imbove, root hhu (be) ; its dependent form is rohk
for ro-ba, 0. Ir. ?^obe. The future independent bit/iidh or bidh is
the 0. Ir. present biid or bith, standing for a pre-Celtic bhv-ije-ti^
bleti, from the root b/ni, Lat. fio, from Aryan bhv-iju, Eng. be.
The dependent future is sim^^le bi, 0. Ir. hii, b'l. There is no
change for assertive or existential statements. The infinitive bhi,
Irish beith, is confused with bith (existence), from the root (/ei, yi^
Lat. vita, Gaelic beo, Gr. bios.
