2. no, relative particle. Before specifically relative forms of simple
verbs it is prefixed, e.g. intan mberes, 19, amal n-oingter,
360. But it follows corresponding copula forms, e. g. húare as
n-, 24, a mba n-, 307, a mbas n-, 309. Otherwise it is
infixed, e.g. intain no mbeid, 77, amal no-n-da, 12.
Its chief uses are : —
(a) It is added optionally to the verb when a relative form
expresses an accusative relation, e.g. 23, 25, 59, 87, 161, 220
(but without n, e. g. 7, 64, 170, 177) ; but not when it expresses
a nominative relation, e.g. 54, 81.
(b) It has the force of an oblique case of the relative, e.g. in
molad ro mmolastar, the praise wherewith he praised, 219 ;
in déne as mbuidigthi, the speed with which thanhs must be
given, 310 ; laithe ro ngénair, the day on which he was born,
300 ; ní hed a méit no-n chretid-si, not only do ye believe
it, 45 : see further 25, 246, 288.
Special instances of (b) are the uses of n : —
(a) After adjectives of manner, e.g. is dían do-r-
réractid, it is swiftly that ye have abandoned, 250 ; is
lérithir inso no nguidim-se, so diligently do I pray, 281.
(/3) After nominal and pronominal conjunctions, e. g. amal
12, a n- 307, céne 3 14, in tan 19, lasse, óre 8, airindí 300.
(c) It is used in reported speech, e.g. foillsigthir as n-ísel,
it is made manifest that it is humble, 55 : cf. 66, 140, 160, 163,
175-
