s, the simple dental spirant, is always lost in auslaut. In anlaut it
regularly becomes the guttural spirant h (v. supra p. 80). But it remains
in a feto genuine Breton words, such as sae robe, seiz seven, sellet to see. In
the combination sv the s also became h and subsequently c'h. In the
combination sc the spirant often remains intact : thus scaff light, scoaz
shoulder, Skr. sTcandha, squeiaff to cut, (o-)k£. iw, Lat. scio, Skr. chhyami,
squeut shadoio, Jr. scdth. But it sometimes drops, as in queuz
= ((tktjSos Fick 3 i. 805.) The combination cs becomes in native
words c'h, as in huech = sex, but in loanwords it becomes either
sc (iaMsq^laxus) or s, as in flus flux, es-freizaff exfrigidare, lisiu
lixivium, bisest bisextus. In the combination st both letters are
sometimes preserved intact, as in staffn palate {Zend ctaman), stautet
mingere (to stale), sterenn star, struyafE (to sneeze). But sometimes
s assimilates t (sevell to arise, root stam , serch concubine, cf. aropy)),
soez stupidus), and sometimes t assimilates s, as in nezz nest ex *neth,
*netia, trout goad, urdeutsch *brosda, yot ' boullie,' Skr. yüsha, Lat.
jus, quet ' bit' Lat. ce(s)-na : sometimes in inlaut both s and t are lost
as in caer, Ir. cathair castrum, hoer Ir. sethar sister, and perhaps
creuuenn crusta, and sometimes the t becomes c, as in guise vestis and ascorn
outeov. In the combination sp the s has changed p to f and then dropi off.
In the combinations sn, si, sm the s has gone leaving no trace. Thus
nadoez needle, Ir. sndthat, neudenn thread, Ir. snâthe, neuf to swim,
Ir. snâm, nezaff nere (a)v{]du), nezenn nit, Ir. sned, lazaff to slay, Ir.
slaide, lenquemenn maw-worm (root slak ' schleichen Fick 2 552), loncafE
glutire, Ir. slucaim, menauet awl o-fiivvi], moguet smoke a^v^w, for
ffjj,vK(o. Iii inlaut s disappears between vowels : louenn louse, teuel root
Tus. In sclear Fr. clair, sclacc Fr. glace the s is prosthetic. In esgal
Fr. e'gal, and prosn Fr. prone the s is a ' stummes zeichen.' In loan-
words s is sometimes written c (as in cim simia), cc, cs or cz.
