DR. ALEX. CARLYLE. 71
Carlyle elsewhere ^ records that he was intro-
duced to Macpherson in the bowling-green, and
found him to be a big man and good-looking,
but proud, reserved, and apparently of an un-
sociable disposition. He remarked that the
young tutor's legs were very thick, and that to
hide them he wore boots, which were not then
in fashion.
