xlii INTRODUCTION
here we have endeavoured to follow the varying usage of the
scribes.
Proclitics are separated from following words, e.g. preposi-
tions, articles, and possessive pronouns from nouns ; negatives,
conjunctions, and the particles no and ro from verbs, but not the
first element of verbs in deuterotonic form, hence no gcbad, ro
chuir, but dobeir, damberat, and similarly rofetammar. Combi-
nations of proclitics are left undivided — don, isind, ara, conct, nos
cuir, dianom thisad, cor imthig (but co rrdnic), nochonom thd ; so
forms of the copula, rop, roptar, robadam, combo (but co mbol, etc.,
for the substantive verb).
However, certain combinations beginning with a proclitic are
retained, such as indechtsa, hifesta, indossa, indiu, indé, inso,
insin, ani, afrithisi, aridisi, etc. (but ar frithise 4509, alaile,
diarailiu, friaraili (but co alaile 8334).
Enclitics are commonly joined to the preceding word —
damsa, a bensom. Somewhat inconsistently the demonstratives
are separated in a lid sin, in molad sa, etc., and the anaphoric
side, attached to pronouns and verbs— dibside, tncside, has been
separated from nouns — a hainm side, dia sil side, etc. In iar
sin, and sin, etc., sin is, of course, stressed.
In the obscure passages called retorics the division of words
is often a matter of conjecture.
In the preparation of the text, resumed at long intervals
often, a certain inconsistency in the extension of abbreviations,
separation of words, accentuation, use of capitals, etc., was
almost inevitable. The following inadvertent departures from
the general practice outlined above should be noted :
