The Fifteen following Hymns or Spiritual Songs, were
composed by this man, known best among hìs countrjTOen
by the name of Jain Ban Maor, — although ahnost un-
lettered. — On account of the character he bore forhonesty
and integrity, Mr Campbell of Shirvine (parish of Glassrie,
Argyllshire), who held two Estates, made him his ground
Officer, aad Baron Bailie.
The Editor, when about 12 years of age, became a
favourite, and got personally acquainted with him ; had
frequent opportunities of hearing him rehearse and bing his
melodious compositions ; although very uncjualified, he took
do^\-n a few of them for his own private amusement. He
was in 1786, by select friends, prevailed upon to publish
thera ; 600 copies were cast, which are long since ahnost
out of print, save a few, Dr M'Leod, Minister of Campsie,
copied into his Gfehc Messenger.
This pious good man, could neither speak nor read
Enghsh, and without any Gtehc books to peruse, except
the Bible and Psalm Book in Irish — The Confession of
Faith — The Shorter Catechism, and a ti'anslation of Bax-
ter's Call to the Unconverted. These were the extent of
his Library, which were all that appeared in print in his
