The River Darien, or the Gulf of Uraba, as Wytfleet and
Borland call it in their maps, signifies, according to Malcolm, a
great river ; from dear, great, and «i;i or an, river or water. Uraba
Itself is s)-nonjmous w,th Darien, iir, a Teutonic word meaning
great, and ad or aba [see As], rivtr. The Derivent, in Cumber-
land, is but a contraction of dear-amhainn, a great river, being the
greatest in the north of England.
