tioned. It is hardly possible adequately to con-
ceive the difficulties which the editor had to
encounter ; his immense labour, however, is in no
small degree compensated by the fact of his con-
tributing so much to establish the authenticity of
the effusions of the venerable bard of Cona, by
silencing the prejudices of sceptics, so that now
even Southrons believe that " Fingal lived, and
that Ossian sang."
In conclusion, the writer begs to thank all his
friends — more especially the Rev. Dr M'Lauch-
lan, for several suggestions; Mr James Macpher-
son, Union Bank, for free access to his invalu-
able collection of Gaelic books; Mr John Mac-
donald, Bohenie, and Mr Alex. Kennedy, Bohun-
tin, Lochaber, from whom he received the oldei-
pieces; and Alex. Macintosh, Esq., Invercoe
HoTise, for transcribing his late fiithei-'s fugitive
