POST OFFICE TELEGRAPHS,
The followiog are the principal Regulations issued for the information of the Pablic : —
TARIFF.
The charge for the transmission of messages by telegraph throughout the United
Kingdom is 6d. for the first twelve Avoi'ds, and |-d. for every additional word. Addresses
are charged for.
The sender of a telegram should furnish his address to enable the Department to
communicate with him if necessary. When it is not to be telegraphed, it should be written
on the back of the form.
Telegrams may be repeated, if the sender desires it, by being signalled back from office
to office. No copy is, in such cases, given to the sender. The charge for repetition is one-
half the ordinary tariff ; a fraction of a halfpenny being reckoned as a halfpenny.
If the receiver of a telegiam doubts its accuracy, he may have it repeated by depositing
half the amount paid for its transmission to him. The money will be refunded if it should
turn out that the telegram has been inaccurately transmitted. A fraction of a halfpenny
is reckoned as a halfpenny.
The cost of a reply, not exceeding forty-eight words, may be prepaid ; and a reply
form will then be delivered to the addressee, who will be at liberty to send his reply, from
any telegraph office, at any time within two months. If the form be not used it may,
within the same period, be sent to the Surveyor- General, General Post Office, Edinburgh,
and the value of it will be refunded. A reply form need not necessarily be used for a reply,
but may be used to prepay any message.
Telegrams redirected to a second address are liable, if any additional service is
performed, to an additional charge of 6d. if the two addresses are within the same town
(each London postal district being considered for this purpose a separate town), but if the
addresses are in different towns the full inland rate is charged for the redirection. In
addition to the amount chargeable on each redirected telegram, £1, Is. per annum is
charged for registration of special instructions as to the redirection of telegrams. Removals
are registered free for a period of one month when this is specially requested.
Copies of a telegram directed to more than one person in the same free delivery are
delivered at a charge of 2d. per copy.
Telegrams in plain language in any European tongue or in Latin are charged for
according to the number of words ; but all unintelligible words not forming part of any
European language or of Latin are charged for at the rate of five letters to a w^ord.
_ No combination of words is counted as one, with the exception of those which are
ordinarily written as one, or coupled by hyphens.
Abbreviated or arbitrary addresses may be registered on payment of a registration fee
of £1, Is. a year, dating from the day of registration. The address must consist of not
less than two words, one of which is to be the town or place of delivery.
Telegrams for Places Abroad. — Messages addressed to Foreign Countries or the Colonies
are received at all postal telegraph stations. For full particulars as to charges, etc.,
reference should be made to the Post Office Guide.
PORTERAGE.
When the terminal telegraph office, i.e. the office nearest to the address, is a Head Post
Office,_the amount paid for the transmission of a message covers the cost of delivery within
one mile or within the town postal delivery when that extends for more than a mile. But
when it is not a Head Post Office, the message is delivered free within one mile only.
