the depth within the pier at low water is from ten to
twelve feet, and at high water about twenty-seven. Ex-
tensive breakwaters, exceeding i,ooo yards in length,
extend on either side of the pier, thus forming a protected
harbour. One of Morton's patent slips is laid down, and
there are warehouses for bonded goods. Ship building
is carried on on a large scale. There is a large hotel, and
the North British Railway Company have a station ; and
hence passengers and goods are embarked for Burntis-
land, whence the railway is continued to Aberdeen &c. It was
atGranton that H.M. the late Queen Victoria landed on her
visit to Scotland on the ist of September, 1842. The Cale-
donian Railway Company hasalso a station at Granton, and a
branch line, for goods only, running to the harbour. The
population of Granton quoad sacra parish in 1901 was 1,728.
Entries and clearances, Granton : —
British, entered 54, tonnagi 052,975 ; cleared 12, 10,749
tonnage; foreign, entered 210, tonnage 95,170; cleared
186, tonnage 74,014. Coastwise, entered 194, tonnage
77,649 ; cleared 232, tonnage 105,208. The number of
vessels registered as belonging to the port December 31st,
1902, was 48, of 1,662 tons, and of fishing boats 42, of 1,405
tonnage, employing 335 men and boys.
Value of total imports in 1902 was ,^801, 455, and of the
exports of British and Irish produce, ^^224,355.
GoHOiB is a village in the parish of St. Cuthbert, lying
to the south-west of Edinburgh, on the road to Ratho, and
has a station on the Suburban and Southside branch of the
North British railway. The population in 1891 was 807.
MoERAYFrELD is a western suburb of the city, situated
where the road to Corstorphine crosses the Water of Leith,
and has a station on the Leith and Cramond Brig branches
of the Caledonian railway.
Newhaven, a fishing village and harbour and a quoad
sacra parish erected from that of North Leith, lies about a
mile west from Leith Fort, with a station on the Leith
branch of the Caledonian railway.
Trinity, a district between Newhaven and Granton, is a
residential marine suburb of Edinburgh on the Forth, having
a chain pier at which steamboats call, and a station on the
North British railway.
Stockbridge is a district in the noith-east of Edinburgh.
