DRY MEN is a parish in Dumbarton poor
combination and Stirling small debt court
district. It is 12 miles long, 3 miles broad
towards the south and 12 in the north, and
is bounded on the north by Aberfoyle, in
Perthshire, on the east by Kippen, Balfron
and Killearn, south by Dumbartonshire, and
on the west by Buchanan. The village,
which stands on the road from Stirling to
Dumbarton, is about 1 mile north from the
Endrick water, which flows into Loch
Lomond, and is 17 miles north-north-west
from Glasgow and 12^ north-east from
Dumbarton. Drymen station, on the Stir-
ling and Balloch section of the North
British railway, is 1£ miles south of the
village in the pariah of Eilmaronock, in
Dumbartonshire. There are Established
and United Free churches. A branch of
the Royal Bank of Scotland is located in
the village. Fairs for cattle are held on
the last Wednesday in April (old style) and
17th May (new Btyle). Duchray castle is
the residence of Edwin Bolton esq. Acre-
age of the parish, 30,854; rateable Talue,
£38,398; population in 1891, 1,512, and in
1901, 1,390; in the ecclesiastical parish,
794, and in the vilage, 340.
At Gartness, about 2£ miles south-east
from Drymen, is a waterfall about 12 feet
in height, which the salmon, when going
up the river, clear by a leap. Near the
Tillage is a factory for woollen cloth and
felting. John Napier, lord of the free
barony of Merchiston and the inTentor of
logarithms, resided here for a consider-
able time: he died 6 April, 1617. There
is a station here on the Forth and Clyde
section of the North British railway. Popu-

DTJNIPACE is a parish, divided into the-
four districts of Little Denovan, Meikle
Denovan, Dunipace and Torwood, in Stir-
ling small debt court district and Larbert
ecclesiastical parish, and bounded on ther
north and west by the parish of St. Ninians*
on the east by Larbert and on the south by
the river Carron, which divides it from
Denny. The town is on the road from
Stirling to Glasgow and Falkirk, about 1
mile north from Denny terminal station
from Larbert on the Glasgow and Stirling
section of the Caledonian railway, 7 south
from Stirling and 6 north-west from Fal-
kirk, .uunipace is included in the police-
burgh of Denny. This parish is rich in
minerals, and has an extension line to the/
mines of the Denny branch mineral rail-
way, crossing the river Carron, which di-
vides this and the adjoining parish- of
Denny; the mines, with other worksj.
afford employment to the inhabitants of thia-
district. In this locality are two eminences.
called " the Hills of Dunipace," presumed:,
to be sepulchral memorials. It was
at Dunipace that Edward I. of England, on
the 14th of October, 1301, signed a warrant!
to his ambassadors, then in France, author-
ising them to consent to a truce with tha
Scots as an indispensable preliminary to-
wards a peace with their ally the French
king, between whom and Edward a destruc-
