1330 ASHKIRK.
ASHKIEK, a parish, formerly partly in
Roxburghshire, but now wholly included in
Selkirk, is in Hawick poor combination
and the small debt court district of Selkirk ;
it is about 8 miles long by irom 1 to 6
broad and is bounded on the west by Sel-
kirk and Kirkhope, and on the east by
Roxburghshire. The village is on the river
Ale, a tributary of the Teviot, and is 5J
miles south from Selkirk and 6& north-
west from Hawick stations on the
North British railway. The Woll is the
residence of W. â– $, Bell esq. D.L., J.P.
and Synton, that of John Corse Scott esq.
Acreage, IS, 159; rateable value, £6,109 ;
population in 1891, 479, and in 1901, 404
civil and 333 ecclesiastical.

- CADDO£H?QOT is a parish in the
•Galashiels poor combination and presby-
tery and in the small debt court district
of Selkirk. It was originally a quoad
sacra parish, but in 1898 was formed into
a civil parish by Secretary for Scotland's
Order, No. 33, dated Dec. 17, 1897, and
embraces parts of the civil parishes of
Yarrow, Galashiels, Stow, Innerleithen
and Selkirk, in the North Eastern division
of the county. The village is 1 mile from
Clovenfords station on the Peebles branch
of the North British railway, and about

Clovenfords is a small village transferred
to Caddonfoot pariah in 1898; here are

ETTEICK is a large parish in the
south-west part of the county, and in
Hawick poor combination and Selkirk small
debt court district ; it is 13 miles long by
from 24 to 10 broad, and is bounded on
the west by Peebles-shire, south by the
county of Dumfries, west by Roxburghshire
and Kirkhope. and north by Yarrow. The
Established church, which stands near the
centre of the parish, on the road from Sel-
kirk to Moffat, and near the Ettrick water, (Anderson Benj. Tushielaw & Cacrabank
is 20 miles south-west from Selkirk terminal j Anderson James, Braidgarhill
station on a branch of the North British â–  Srydon George, Scabcleuch
railway from Galashiels, and 18 north-east 'Brydone William, Annelshope
St. Mary's Loch at the northern boundary.
The parish is very mountainous. The
highest peaks being : Ettrick Pen, 2,269
feet; Capel Fell, 2,223; Andrewhinney
Rill, 2,220; Wind Fell, 2,180; Bcdesbect
Law, 2,173; Bellis Craig, 2,04G; Herman
Law, 2,014; Ward Law, 1,951, and Muckle
Knees, 1.029. Thirlstane Castle, which
stands in a park over 1. mile long by a
quarter of a mile wide, and near the Ettrick
water, is the seat of Lord Napier and Et-
trick. The Duke of Buccleuch E.G., K.T.
who is also lord of the manor. Lord Napier
and Ettrick, Lieut. -Col. B. T. G. Ander-
son and George Pott esq. of Potburn,
are the principal landowners.
In the northern part of this parish, at
Chapelhope, a small hamlet at the head of
the Loch of the Lowes, is a monument,
erected to James Hogg, known as the
" Ettrick Shepherd," who was born in
Ettrick forest either in December, 1770, or
January, 1772 ; and died at Altrive in the
adjoining parish of Tarrow in 1835; he
was first brought to notice about 1801 by
Sir Walter Scott, who. in 1807, encouraged
him to print a volume of his poems;
this, and a prize gained from the
Highland Society for an Essay on Sheep,
induced him in 1810 to take up the role of
author, and he published a good many
poetical and prose pieces, the best being
" The Queen's Wake " and " The Brownie
of Bodsbeck " ; this memorial consists of
I the figure of a border shepherd standing
on a high pedestal, and at Ettrick Hall
farm is another memorial, erected in 1898
by public subscription. Acreage, 42,450;
rateable value, £8,912; population in 1891,
414, and in 1901, 331.

Aitcheson William (reps, of), Glenkerry
from Moffat terminal station on a branch
from Beattock on the Lockerbie line of
the Caledonian railway. Francis, 10th
Baron Napier and lsc Baron Ettrick was
interred in the churchyard, in 1899. There
is also a Free church, serving for the two
parishes of Ettrick and Kirkhope. The
Loch of the Lowes, about 1 mile long by
about half a mile wide, is in the parish,
which is also watered by several streams,
the principal being the Ettrick water, a
tributary of the Tweed, rising in the
south-western extremity of the parish, neat
Ettrick Pen, and running through the
4 miles south from Galashiels station on! centre, receiving in its course the Tema
the same line. The church is a small water, the Rankle, the Tushielaw, and

GALASHIELS is a parliamentary burgh,
market town and parish, and head of a poor
combination, 31 miles south-south-east from
Edinburgh, 18 east from Peebles, 6 north
from Selkirk, 4 north-west from Melrose
and 34 south-by-west from Berwick, with a
station on the main line of the North British
railway (Waverley route); there is also a
branch, line to Selkirk, and one to Inner-
GALASHIELS.
leithen and Peebles. The town stands on
a kind of tableland on both sides of the
Gala, about a mile above the confluence
of that river with the Tweed. The Gala
is crossed by six bridges, two being for
foot passengers only. The parish of Gala-
shiels was formed, in the early part of the
17th century, out of the two old parishes,
Lindean, in Roxburghshire, and Boldside,
in "Selkirkshire, and was in both counties
until, under the provisions of the " Local
Government (Scotland) Act, 1889 " (52 and
53 Vict. c. 60, sections 44 to 50), it has
been placed wholly in Selkirkshire. This
burgh, together with Hawick and Sel-
kirk, forms the Hawick parliamentary dis-
trict, constituted in 1868, and returning
one member. It is governed by a provost,
