ST. BOSWELLS.
narrow space between the Tweed and Teviot
and about 2 miles from the site of the
present village. Near the castle, and between
it and the Tweed, stood the old burgh of Rox-
burgh, which has entirely disappeared ; the
castle was demolished by the Scots in 1460,
after they had retaken it from the English;
and the burgh having lost its protection
gradually decayed. In a field near the
parish church are the remains of a border
tower, called " Wallace's Tower," but only
the lower part, consisting of a stone vaulted
chamber, is now intact. This fort was
burned by the Earl of Hertford in his
marauding expedition of 1545. The ancient
fair of St. James of Roxburgh is still
held annually, on Aug. 5th, on St. James's
green, close to the site of the old burgh :
it is mentioned in a charter of William the
Lion to the monks of Kelso, and was for
long the best known fair in the south of
Scotland. Sunlaws, the seat of Major Robt.
Scott-Kerr, is in this parish. The Duke of
Roxburghe K.T., M.V.O. is lord of the
manor and principal landowner. Acreage,
7,714; rateable value, £10,719 ; population
in 1801, 954, and in 1901, 835 civil and 848
ecclesiastical.
Heiton is a village in the parish, and is
on the road from Kelso to Jedburgh.
Fairnington is a district adjoining the
Roman Causeway, and is owned by Henry
Rutherford esq.
