NEILSTON is a parish and town, in
Paisley small debt court district and poor
combination, 9 miles south-west from Glas-
gow, 9 north-north-east from Stewarton, 5
south from Paisley and 2 south-west from
Barrhead, with 2 stations, one on the
Caledonian and Glasgow and Kilmarnock
joint railways and one on the Caledonian
railway. The village is situated on the
river Leven, on the road to Irvine. The
parish is 8 miles in length by from 2 to>
4 in breadth, and is traversed by a ridge'
of hills extending through its entire-
length. There are two small lakes, called.
Loch Libo and Loch Long. From the
former issues the Lugton, a tributary of.
the Garnock. The parish contains part of
the town of Barrhead. In or near the
village are bleachfields and print works,,
and a branch of the Clydesdale Bank
Limited. The parish church, built in 1785,
has a tower with clock, and will seat 889
persons. Arthurlee is the seat of Henry-
Barclay Dunlop esq. J. P., D.L. and Cald-
well House, of Capt. William Mure D.L.

Graham, of Cniigallian, are the principal _
landowners. The area of the parish com-
prises 12,862 acres; rateable value, land-
ward, £36,163; burghal (part of Barrhead),
£30,720; population in 1891, 11,374, and
in 1901, 13,714: viz. Barrhead police burgh
8,639, Neilston town 2,668, landward 2,409.
The population of the ecclesiastical parish-
in 1901 was 3,959.
Gateside is a village in the parish. The
population in 1901 was 398.
Crofthead is another village The popu-
lation in 1901 was 304.
