1144 PERTH.
PERTHSHIRE.
[slater's
The weekly market day is Friday. The fairs, since the year
1822, have been altered by the magistrates and town council, on
account of the general inconvenience resulting from the dates
formerly appointed falling on the same days, or at the Bame
time, with the fairs of Falkirk and other places ; they are now,
therefore, held on the first Friday in March, April, July and
September, on the third Friday in October, the second Friday
in December, and a sheep and wool fair the first Tuesday after
Inverness wool fair, and a horse market takes place on uhe
first Friday in May. There are now two great cattle and sheep
markets in Perth, sales taking place on Monday and Friday.
Three newspapers are published here, viz. : the " Perthshire
Advertiser " (Liberal Unionist"), established in 1829, and pub-
lished three times a week; the "Perthshire Constitutional and
Journal" (Conservative), established in 1832, and the "Perth-
shire Courier and Farmers' Journal," established in 1809, and
Liberal in politics.

inmates of the Royal Infirmary; 12 officials and 177 inmates
of the Poorhouse ; 156 in Fechney Industrial School for Boys;

and 50 officials and 339 prisoners in the General Prison for
Scotland.

was 5.076.
Immediately adjoining the bridge is the suburb of Bridgend,
leading to Kinnoull Hill, at the distance of a mile and a half,
which can be ascended by various pleasant walks.
Craigend is a small hamlet on the Edinburgh road, 2 miles
from and in the parish of Perth, and has a United Free church
