ABERFELDY is a town and police
burgh in the parish of Dull, and in the poor
combination of Atholl and Breadalbane, with
a terminal station on a branch from Ballin-
luig junction on the Perth and Blair Atholl
section of the Highland railway, and is
18 miles north-west from Dunkeld, 9 west
from Logierait and 6 north-east from Een-
more; the town stands on the south bank of
the beautiful river Tay,on the GreatHighland
road, which crosses the river by an elegant
bridge of three arches, constructed by the
celebrated Maj.-Gen George Wade, sometime
M.P. for Hindon and Bath, and who, during
the years 1725-6, superintended the formation
of a number of military roads in the Scottish
Highlands. The town, which is lighted with
gas, and well supplied with water, was con-
stituted a police burgh in 1887 under the
Xindsay Police Act of 1862, and is now
governed by a provost, who is ex-officio a
justice of the peace for the county, two
bailies, and six councillors. A sheriff
small debt court is held in the Town Hall
on the last Saturday of March, July and
•November. There are branches here of the
Bank of Scotland, the Union Bank of Scot-
land Limited and the Commercial Bank of
Scotland Limited, and there is also a woollen
factory. The principal hotels are the Bread-
albane Arms and the Palace and Station
hotels, all of which are much patronised
in the season by visitors, more especially
the " Breadalbane," on account of the
facilities it affords for fishing in the Tay
â– and Loch-na-Craig, this hotel having the
privilege of the loch and a joint right with
the Aberfeldy Angling Club in the river.
The celebrated 42nd Highlanders, com-
monly known, on account of their dark
tartan, as "the Black Watch," were en-
rolled in this district, but consisted in the
first instance of armed detachments of
loyal clans employed during the period
1725-30 to watch the Highlands. In 1887
a monument was erected here, in the form
of a cairn, at a cost of about £500, to
commemorate the formation of the regi-
ment. In the neighbourhood are the romantic
falls of Moness. Several fairs were formerly
held in the course of the year ; but the only
one now is on the last Thursday in October.
PEETHSHIRE.
for cattle and sheep ; weekly cattle sales
are held on Thursday. The Marquess of
Breadalbane E.G., P.O., D.L., J.P. is
the principal landowner. The area of the
burgh is 224 acres ; rateable value is
£7,930; population in 1891, 1,469, and in
1901 was 1,508 in the burgh and 1,666 in
the ecclesiastical parish.
