TRAQUAIE, is a parish in the small
debt court district of Peebles, and is on the
south bank of the Tweed, and watered also
by the river Quair ; it lies opposite to Inner-
leithen, with which place it is connected by
â– a modern girder bridge over the Tweed,
erected at a cost of about £3,500. The Tra-
quair, Fmgland and Newhall brooks and the
Bold burn, all tributaries of the Tweed,
flow through the parish. The parish is
generally mountainous, and includes Gums-
cleugh and Minchmoor, two lofty eminences
lying on the old road to Selkirk, and over
which Montrose retreated after his defeat
â– at the battle of Philipaugh, 13 Sept. 1645.
The church is 3i miles south from Inner-
leithen station on the Peebles and Gala-
shiels section of the North British railway,
and 9 south-east from Peebles; there is
also a station at Cardrona in this parish,
on the same branch, 6 miles north from
the church. By the " Local Government
'(Scotland) Act, 1889 " (52 and 53 Vict. c.
50, sections 44 to 50), boundary order 59,
a portion of Yarrow parish, in Selkirk-
shire, has been transferred to Traquair.
This place, from 1683, conferred the title
of earl upon the Stuart family, barons
Stuart, Linton and Cabarston, but all these
became dormant on the death of Charles,
'3th Earl, in 1861. Traquair House has a
â– tower at the north-east corner, believed to
have been erected before the year 900;
large additions were made to this mansion
by John, first Earl of Traquair. The
chartulary of the family contains many
ancient and important family and historical
documents, some of which are dated as far
back as the 9th century, and bear the
signature of Malcolm III. The house is
now the seat of Herbert Constable Max-
-well-Stuart esq. D.L., J.P. the present
Tepresentative of the family, who acquired
property through Lady Louisa Stuart, who
died in 1875; it is delightfully situated on
â– the banks of the Tweed, where that river
and the Quair unite; and about a quarter
of a mile to the west of the mansion-house
is the " Bush .a boon Traquair " (the subject
of the celebrated ballad), now indicated
only by a few birch trees, the remains of
a thicket or arbour. The Glen, the seat
of Sir Charles Tennant bart. D.L. is also
an this parish. Cardrona House is the
PEEBLES-SHIRE.

son. The area is 18,489 acres ; rateable
vallue, £8,000; population in 1901, 618.

TWEEDSMUIE until about the
middle of the 17th century, formed part
of the parish of Drumelzier, but was then
erected into a separate parish. It is in
the Peebles poor combination and is in the
south-western corner of the county, with
Lanarkshire on its western and Dumfries-
shire on its southern border. Within the
bounds of the parish the river Tweed is
augmented by the Fruid, Talla and Cor
waters and several brooks. The water
scheme (1895) of the Edinburgh and Dis-
trict Water Trust included the formation
of a reservoir in the valley of the Talla,
with pipes to convey 24,000,000 gallons
daily, the election of a 'bridge of granite
and steel in place of the old narrow
bridge at Tweedsmuir and the formation
of a road to the reservoir. The church is
7 miles south from Broughton station on
the Symington and Peebles section of the
Caledonian railway, and about 16 south-
west from Peebles. There are several
ancient and rude strongholds in the
parish, some of them dignified by the
name of " Castles," but having few of the
features belonging to a fortress. The
Earl of Wemyss and March A.D.C., V.D.,
LL.D., The Edinburgh Water Trust and
Sir Walter Thorburn M.P. of Kerfield, are
the principal landowners. Acreage,
37,580; rateable value, £4,S72; popula-
tion in 1891, 207, and in 1901, 435.

WALKERBTJRN is a village, in the
civil parish of Innerleithen, and a quoad
sacra parish erected from the civil
parishes of Innerleithen and Traquair ; it
is on the north bank of the Tweed. The
village is supplied with spring water from
the neighbouring hills, and has a station
on the Peebles and Gallashiels section of
the North British railway, about 8 miiies
south-west from Peebles. In the village is
a. Public hall holding 800 people. About
18o5 this village consisted only of two cots
and a farm house, but the late Henry Bal-
lantyne esq. having secured the use of the
Tweed as a motive power for the mills,
subsequently, in conjunction with the late
Robert Freer, established woollen factories
here, of which Messrs. James Dalziel and
Co. are the present proprietors. The two
mills give employment to a number of
hands. Population in 1891, 1,285, and in
1901, 1,161.
