1080 Innerleithen'
PEEBLES-SHIEE.
[slater's
50), the portion of Innerleithen formerly Liberal, Eobert Lermond, sec
in Selkirk county has been transferred to
Peebles-shire. The Eoman Catholic church
was built by benefactions left by Lady
Louisa Stuart, of Traquair, the last of the
direct line of that family, d. 1875. There
is a branch of the Bank of Scotland, and a
savings bank here. Upon the banks of the
Leithen are several large woollen factories,
the machinery of â– which is partly propelled
by the stream, and the works employ a con-
Biderable number of hands. Tweed and
other woollen goods are made here. Some
of the prosperity of the village is derived
from the number of visitors who resort
here in summer for the benefit of the
mineral springs, which possess properties
eimilar to the waters of Harrogate and
Strathpeffer, and are found beneficial in
cases of scrofulous disorders, inflammation
of the eye and various diseases originating
in impurity of the blood, and also for
dyspepsia and stomach disorders. Private
furnished lodgings are obtainable, and there
are likewise three hotels. A well-house
was erected in 1826, which is now the
property of the St. Eonan's Wells and
Mineral Water Co. Limited, and a pump-
house was built in 1896. About 1840 an
association was instituted styled the " St.
Eonan's BorderClub," under whose auspices
an annual festival was held for the exhibi
tion of border games and gymnastic exer
cises. Though the club is extinct, the
competitions still take place, and usually
in August. About 3 miles west, situated
on a knoll, are the ruins of Horsbrugh
Castle, an ancient border peel tower, said
by Armstrong to have been habitable in
1775. Between Innerleithen and Walker-
burn are Purves Hill Terraces, which are
planted with ash trees, but their contour
may be easily made out; they varv from
about 50 feet to about 120 feet in breath,
and the second in the ascent is over 900
feet in length; the depth between each
terrace is about 14 feet. At one end of
these terraces stood Purves Hill Tower, but
only a few stones now remain to attest its
site. This place is supposed to have fur-
nished the scene of Sir Walter Scott's novel,
" St. Eonan's Well." Glenormiston House
is the residence of Michael G. Thorburn
esq. J.P. The trustees of the late George
Miller-Cunningham esq. of Leithen Lodge
'(d. 1897), Major James Llewellyn Evans,
of Holylee, M. G. Thorburn esq. and Her-
bert Constable Maxwell-Stuart esq. of
Scarthingwell Hall, Tadcaster, Yorks, are
the principal landowners. The area of the
parish is 24,021 acres; burgh, 359 acres;
rateable value, landward, £8.371 ; burghal,
£8,0S0; the population in 1891 was 4,161
in the civil parish, 2,775 in the ecclesias-
tical and 2,512 in the burgh, and in 1901
•was 3,659 in the civil parish, 2,410 in the
ecclesiastical and 2,181 in the burgh.

KILBUCHO, see Broughton, Glen-
holm AND KILBUCHO.
KIRKTJRD is a parish in Peebles poor
combination, on the western confines of
the county, and is bounded on the north by
the Tarth, a tributary of the Tweed. The
Broughton brook, a tributary of the latter,
flows through the parish. From the first-
named river the land rises in cultivated and
enclosed grounds, and then becomes hilly,
with eminences covered with plantations;
it is about 4 miles south from Dolphinton
station on the Leadburn and Dolphinton
branch of the North British railwav, and on
the Carstairs and Doinhinton branch of the
Caledonian railwav, and about 9 north-west
from Peebles. The ancient church of Kirk-
urd belonged at an early period to the
bishops of Glasgow, one of whom gave it to
the hospital of Soltre, and it remained the
property of that charitable institution until
