LENZIE is partly in the parish of Cadder,
in the county of Lanark, and partly in the
parish of Kirkintilloch, in Dumbartonshire,
and will be found in the latter county.
LESMAHAGOW is a parish and vil-
lage in the Upper ward of the county and
in Lanark email debts> court district, with a
station on a branch of the Caledonian rail-
way from Glasgow and Hamilton, the
village, also called Abbey Green, is on the
river Nethan, a tributary of the Clyde, and
is 38 miles west from Edinburgh, 23 south-
past from Glasgow and 6 south-west from
Lanark; the parish is 12 miles square,
and bounded on the north-east by
the river Clyde, south-east by the Douglas
and Poniel waters, and north-west by the
Kype water ; it abounds in coal, ironstone
and limestone, in the working of which
a considerable number of the inhabitants
find employment; a line of railway, for this
traffic only, passes through or near most
of the mines, and joins the Caledonian main
line at Motherwell. A new line of the
Caledonian railway is now (1903) in course
of construction, between Lesmahagow and
Darvell, passing through Strathaven. The
parish church, erected by the heritors of
the parish in 1808, stands on part of the
site of the priory, and in 1899 was inter-
nally restored, at a cost of about £3,500.
The British Linen Co. Bank and the
Royal Bank of Scotland have branches
here. The principal hotels are the Abbey
Green, the Commercial, the Royal, and the
Masons' Arms, all of which are also post-
ing houses. Two hiring fairs and two others
for general business are held during the
year. A market, known as Big Wednesday
is held in the month of December. Here
was anciently a priory, founded by David
I. in 1140, and dedicated to St. Machutus.
The noble ruins of Craignethan, or Dra-
phane Castle, the property of the Earl of
Home, are immortalised by Sir Walte
Scott in " Old Mortality," under the name
of " Tillietudlem Castle," and a room in
the castle is still shown as that in which
the unortunate Queen Mary took refuge
after her escape from Lochleven Castle, in
1667. The Duke of Hamilton, the Earl of
Home K.T., A.D.C., V.D. and J. C. Hope.
Vere esq.. D.L., J.P. of Blackwood House,
are the principal landowners. The area
is 41,311 acres; assessable value, £59,722
the' population in 1891 was 9,752 in the
LANARKSHIRE.
civil parish and 8,423 in the ecclesiastical
parish; in 1901, 10,954 in the civil parish,
and, 9,453 in the ecclesiastical parish.
Coalburn is a nrning village, about 4
miles south of Abbey Green, with a station
on the Lesmahagnw branch of the Cale-
donian railwav. Population in 1901 was
672.
Crossford is a village in a beautiful valley
on the left bank nf the river Clyde, and near
its confluence with the Nethan; it is about
5 miles north-by-east from Abbey Green
and 4£ north-west from Lanark. Population
in 1891 was 818, and in 1901, 728.
Kirkmutrhill and Blackwood are villages
adjacent to each other, abouti 3 miles north-
west from Abbey Green, on the Glasgow
road, and at Blackwood is a station on the
Caledonian railway. Boghead is a small
village; about 1£ miles distant from Kirk-
muirhill; the inhabitants of which are
principally employed in Dunduft Stone
Quarry. Auchenheath, a mining village,
is about 3 miles north from Abbey Green,
and has a station on the Caledonian railway.
