FORT "WILLIAM is a town, port and
police burgh in the parish of JXilmallie, in
the Lorn poor combination, and is the head
of a small debt court ; it lies a little south
of the entrance to the Caledonian Canal, at
the head of Loch Linnhe, 65 miles south-
west from Inverness. The fort from which
it takes its name, standing at the east end
of the town, was originally constructed by
Cromwell, in 1655, and rebuilt by William
III. in 1690; it stood two sieges in 1715
and 174*5, and up to 1854 was garrisoned
by a company of a line regiment : after
the Crimean war the 71st Highlanders and
the Lancashire militia were successively
stationed here, but in 1860 the fort was
sold by the Government to Mrs. Cameron
Campbell, of Menzie : the former barracks
have been converted into dwelling houses,
and the moat into gardens. This place has
been successively known by the names of
Gordonsbnrgh, Duncansburgh and Mary-
burcrh. The West Highland railway from
Helensburgh has a station here, and a
number of steamers ply daily to Oban, in
connection with the railway there. Com-
munication is also maintained with Glasgow
and Inverness by the Caledonian and
Crinan canals several times daily during
the summer, and twice a week in winter.
The chief industry is the distilling of
whisky; the famous ''Long John's Dew
of Ben Nevis " being manufactured here,
but the town is also the centre of a large
sheep farming district. Fishing is carried
on to a smalf extent, and it is a place of
considerable resort for the tourist and the
traveller in the summer months. In the
river Lochy, to the north-east of the town.
[skater's
High street is a monument, erected in
1852, to the late William Kennedy esq.
M.D. and in the garden of the Free Church
manse is a marble statue of Dr. Chalmers.
The Belford Hospital, erected and endowed
in 1865, by the late Andrew Belford, of
Glenfintaig, for the inhabitants of Lochaber,
is a plain but substantial building at tha
east end of the town, and will hold 30
patients. A Fever Hospital, for 8 patients,
connected with this institution, was erected
in 1894. Half a mile from the town is the
Nevis distillery, belonging to Messrs. D. P.
M'Donald and Sons, the Ben Nevis dis-
tillery, belonging to the same firm, being
situated about two miles from Fort William.
These works give employment to upwards
of 200 hands. The principal hotels are the
Chevalier, Caledonian, Imperial, Ben Nevis,
Alexandra, the West End, from which a
splendid view is obtained of the lake and
the Ardgour hills, the Station, the Palace,
a fine structure of red sandstone, and the
Argyll. Markets are held at different
periods throughout the year, and there are
weekly auction sales of live stock. Fairs
are held on the fourth Wednesday in March,
the second Wednesdays in June and Novem-
ber, Tuesday after second Thursday in
July, and Tuesday fortnight before Falkirk
Tryst in October. Donald Cameron esq.
of Lochiel, Sir John M. Stirling Maxwell
bart. M.P., D.L. of Pollock House, Pollock-
shaws, and Mrs. Lucy Cameron, of Callart,
are the principal landowners. The popula-
tion in 1891 was 1,870, and in 1901, 2,087;
rateable value, £12,192.

also a United Free Church with a manse.
The Beading Boom and Library were pre-
