KIRRIEMUIR is a town of considerable
antiquity, a burgh of barony, police burgli
and capital of its parish, 62 miles north
from Edinburgh, 18 north from Dundee 6
west-north-west from Forfar and 5 north
from Glamis; with a station which is
the terminus of a branch line of the
Caledonian railway from Forfar. The town
is situated neaf the foot of the braes of
Angus, on the south-west side of the hill,
along the northern brow of a glen, through
which flows the Gairie burn. The prospect
from the lower part of the town is bounded
by the southern braes of the glen, but from
the higher part almost the whole of the Vale
of Strathmore is visible. The town has a
police commission, consisting of a provost,
two bailies and nine commissioners; a jus-
tice of peace court is held when required,
and a sheriff's court six times a year, for re-
covery of small debts. The date of the
barony of Kirriemuir is unknown, and it
is only certain that the jurisdiction of its
bailie once extended over a large tract
of country. The Earl of Home K.T., V.D.,
A.D.C. is superior of the burgh. 'For a
long period Kirriemuir has been~the seat of.
considerable manufactures, comprising
about twenty varieties of linen, and it is
celebrated for the excellent fabric. Some
idea may be formed of the importance of
this trade from the fact that the looms of
Kirriemuir have furnished in one year up-
wards of 100,000 pieces, varying from 100
to. 170 yards, giving employment to 1,500
persons. There are branches here of the
British Linen Company, the National Bank
of Scotland Limited, the Union Bank of
Scotland Limited and the Bank of Scotland.
The principal hotels are the Roval and the
Airlie Arms. The library belonging to
the Young Men's Christian Association
contains about 3.000 volumes, and is open
to the public. There are places of worship
for the Established Church, United Free
Church, Original Seceders and Episco-
palians. The endowed seminary, erected
and endowed from a bequest made in 1829
by Mr. John Webster, writer and banker,
is now a public school, with a secondary
department. Two newspapers, "The
Kirriemuir Observer," and "The Kirrie-
muir Free Press," are published weekly
on Fridays. A little to the east of the
town is the cemetery, situated on the
sloping side of an eminence. Three miles
to the north-east, within the boundary of
the parish, over the small river Carity,
stands the Castle of Inverquarity, formerly
a stronghold of the Ogilvies, and still in
FORFARSHIRE.
