poor combination, the bead of a Fmall debt
court district, capital of the parish of its
name and the seat of a presbytery; 201

way of Aberdeen, 165 by way of Brechin and

north-east of Inverness, 21 west of Focha-
bers, 20 east of Fort George, 12 west of
Elgin and 11 east of Nairn, with a station
on the Highland railway. It is a neatly-
built, clean town, and stands on rising
' ground ; at a distance of about 5 miles is the
village of Findhorn, which is its seaport.
Forres is noted for one of the most remark-
able stone obelisks of ancient date in Brit-
ain ; this interesting object stands at the
east end of the town, and is supposed to
commemorate a pacification concluded here
between Malcolm II. and Sweno, a Danish
invader, about the beginning of the 11th
century; it is an enormous plab of grey
stone, upwards of 20 feet In height, tup-
ported by a socket which conceals at least
three feet more, and the shape resembles that
of a very long wedge, or, as> come fanci-

fully describe it, a highland broad-sword;
the figures upon the obelisk, which are pre-
sumed to represent a battle und subsequent
treaty, are wonderfully distinct, considering
that they must have withstood the assaults
of wind and weather during the last eight
centuries. At the western extremity of the
town, on an eminence, once stood a castle,
wherein Duffus, one of the early Kings of
Scotland, was perfidiously killed by Donald,
governor of the fortress, which eireum-
etance, it is said, Shakespeare has made use
of in his dramatic version of the murder of
King Duncan by Macbeth: and it was on
the waste in the neighbourhood that that
hero, along with Banquo (according to the
old historians) met the " weird sisters."
who gave him so many fatal promises. The
exact spot on which that meeting is asserted
by the country people to have taken place
is marked by a small clump of trees, about
200 yards north from the post road between
Forres and Nairn, near the toll bar, 5 miles
from the former of these places, 1£ miles
from Brodie station and nearly on the con-
fines, of the two counties of Moray and

Nanm. The country has now been broughb
under cultivation and can no longer be de-
scribed as a rugged heath. On the castle
eminence is a granite obelisk to the memory
of Dr. Thomson, who sacrificed his life by
over exertion in his attention to the wounded
Russians after the famous battle of Alma.
Upon an eminence to the south-nas-t of the
town stands a tower, erected by the inhabit-
ants of Forres In honour of Lord Nelson,
the walk to which, as it winds round the
hill, is extremely pleasant; from its eleva-
ted situation, a fine view is hence obtained,
and the tower is conspicuous for a
considerable distance. Sloping to the
north, where the river Findhorn sweeps
round from the south-west through tne
Forest of Darnaway, is a modern mansion,
the seat of the Earl of Moray; ndjoining it
is the old Casf.e of Darnaway, in which is a
fine hall, built by Earl Randolph, regent, of
Scotland during the minority of David
Bruce, and capable of holding 1,000 men
under arms. Here Mary Queen of Scots
held her court in I5G6. Altyre is the
residence of Sir William G. Gordon-Cum-
