RATHO is a parish and village, in the
small debt court district of Edinburgh; the
parish is about 4 miles long and 3 broad, and
lies midway between the Pentland Hills and
the Firth of Forth ; it is bounded on the north
and north-west by Kirkliston, on the north
by Kirkliston and Corstophine, south-east by
Currie, and south-west by Kirknewton ; the
village is about 8 "miles west-by-suuth from
Edinburgh, and has a junction station on the
Edinburgh and Glasgow section of the North
British railway. The country in the eastern
pnrt of the parish is> fiat, and the soil fertile,
but the Ground rises gradually towards the
south. The parish church, originally erected
in the 12th century and restored in rhe 17th
and again in the earlier part of the present
century, is an irregular structure, incorporat-
ing work of each of these periods, but ia
not without features of interest. The Roman
Catholic church was erected in 1883. Dal-
mahoy, the property of the Earl of Morton,
and Hatton House, formerly belonging to
the Maitlands, Earls of Lauderdale, but
now the property of James McKelvie esq.
are both in this parish. Hatton is one of
the oldest and most substantially built
houses in Scotland, and its massive walls
contain hiding places used in the old
troublous times. William Wilkie D.D. a.
poet, sometimes called the " Scottish
Homer," and formerly professor of philo-
sophy at St. Andrew's, was born here, or
at Dalmeny, 5 Oct. 1721. Robert Liston
F.R.S. an eminent surgeon, is said to have
been born here, 28 Oct. 1794, but Eccles-
inachan, co. Linlithgow, has also been
assigned as his birthplace. Sir W. Fettes
is also believed to have been a native
of this parish. There are vestiges of two
Danish camps, one on Kaimes Hill, and the
other on South Piatt Hill. The Earl of
Morton is the principal landowner. The
area comprises 6,142 acres; rateable value,
£11,332; the population in 1901 was 1,946,
of which 755 were in the village.
