TYNBON is a parish in the Dumfries
email debt court district, and lies 6 miles
â– south-west from Thornhill station on the
Glasgow and South Western railway, be-
tween Penpont on the north and north-
east, and Glencairn on the south, and ex-
tends 9 miles in length, by a breadth of
from 2 to 3. The parish is partially
watered by the Shinnel river, along the
banks of which there is some pleasing
â– scenery. Near the eastern extremity of the
parish rises the Doon of Tynron, a con-
spicuous pyramidical hill, near the summit
â– of which is an ancient castle. The prin-
cipal landowners in the parish are the
Duke of Buccleuch E.G., K.T., P.O. ; Capt.
George Laurie Walker J. P. of Crawford-
ton ; Mrs. Frank, of Appin ; Samuel
Steuart Gladstone esq. J.P. of Lann Hall,
and Capenoch ; James J. Mein Austin esq.
•of Dalmakerran, and Lieut.-Col. John Ken-
nedy J.P. of Kirkland. The area com-
prises 15,708 acres; rateable value, £5,345;
the population in 1891 was 359, and in
1901, 334.

WAMPHRAY is a parish adjoining
Kirkpatrick-Juxta and Johnstone, 8 miles
in length by 3£ in breadth, and haa a sta-
tion on the Caledonian railway. The
parish church stands in a deep wooded
recess, by the side of Wamphray water,
and over the belfry door is a fine sculp-
tured stone, probably part of an ancient
cross, which has been imitated in a
monument erected to Mr. Charteris, late
teacher here, by his son, Professor Char-
teris, of Edinburgh. Wamphray water, a
tributary of the river Annan, brawls and
thunders through a most romantic and
picturesque glen, formed on both .sides
either by high steep banks clad with
thriving plantations, or by lofty basaltic
columns, mantled with ivy, and saplings
of ash springing from their interstices.
Sir Robert Jardine bart. of Castlemilk, is
the principal landowner. The area com-
prises 13,136 acres; rateable value,
£5,331; the population in 1891 was 458,
and in 1901, 396.

WANLOCKEEAD is a village and
quoad sacra parish, at the eastern ex-
tremity of the parish of Sanquhar, and
near the foot of the Lowther Hills, about
9 miles north-east from the burgh and 6
from Elvanfoot station on the Caledonian
railway; it is sa : d to stand at a greater
elevation above the sea level than any
other village or town in Scotland. The
houses are scattered on the hillside, with-
out regard to regularity. The extensive
and valuable lead mines in this neigh-
bourhood belong to the Duke of Buccleuch
K.G., K.T., P.C. and furn'sh employment
to a considerable number of miners,
artisans and others. The population in
1891 was 745, and in 1901, 624.

WESTERKIBK is a parish and vil-
lage near the north-eastern boundary of
the county, in the small debt court dis-
trict of Langholm and Hawick poor
combination, and about 6 miles north-west
from Langholm (the nearest) station on
the North British railway. Nearly the
whole of this portion of the district is
devoted to pasturage for sheep and cattle.
The church, which stands on the north
bank of the river Esk, is a building of
stone, erected in 1880 by the late Duke
of Buccleuch K.G. and consists of nave
and a tower with one bell. Burnfoot,
the residence of Colonel William Elphin-
stone Malcolm J.P., D.L. is situated on
the banks of the Esk, 3 miles from Lang-
holm , and was the bi rth-p lace of the
" four knights of Eskdale," Admiral Sir
Pulteney Malcolm G.C.B., G.C.M.G. born
21 February, 1768, General Sir John Mal-
colm G.C.B. born 2nd May, 1769, Colonel
Sir James Malcolm K.C.B. d. 1849, and
Rear-Admiral Sir Charles Malcolm K.T.,
C.B. born 1782, who in various ways
distinguished themselves in different parts
