ROSENEATH is a village and parish, in
Dumbarton poor combination, occupying
the peninsula of Roseneath, and extending
for about 7 miles from east to west, and
from one to four broad. It is about 3
miles west from Helensburgh station (by
ferry across Gare Loch) on the West High-
land section of the North British railway.
The parish church, a small modern edifice,
stands within a quarter of a mile of the
ferry and pier. There is also a United
Free church in the neighbourhood, and
another at Clynder, which latter place and
Rahane are districts in this parish, the
former one mile and the latter 3 miles
north from Roseneath village. The man-
sion of Roseneath, the propertv and resi-
dence of the Duke of Argyll K.T., P.O.,
G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O., V.D. and Princess
Louise, is the principal object of interest.
Kilcreggan is a village about 2 miles dis-
tant from Roseneath, over the hills. Cove
is a village a mile further west, at the
entrance of Loch Long: both are resorted
to for sea bathing, and consist of a series
of villas and mansions extending for 4i
miles along the shore.; at each is a pier
for the convenience of passing streamers.
These two villages were formed into a
police burgh in 1865, and are ecclesiasti-
cally in the quoad Bacra parish of Craig-
rownie, which is separated from Roseneath
and includes the whole burgh of Kilcreg-
sran and Cove; the parish extends about
3 miles beyond Cove. There is an Estab-
lished church. The area of Roseneath
parish comprises 8,467 acres ; rateable
value of landward, £10,900; the popu-
lation of the civil parish in 1891 was
2^064, and in 1901, 1.923, and of the
ecclesiastical parish, 675 ; the population
of the ecclesiastical parish of Craig-
rownie in 1901 was 1.145. The police
burgh of Cove and Kilcregsrnn has an
area of 447 acres; rateable value. £12,000,
and in 1901 had a population of 942.
