CAITHNESS-SHIRE. lybster in latheron. 407
LYBSTER IN LATHERON.
ILYBSTER is an ecclesiastical parish and
-village at the mouth of the Beisgill burn,
in the parish of Latheron, in which poor
combination it is included, and is in the
email debt court district of Wick ; it has
a station on the Highland railway, and is
14 miles south-by-west from Wick town.
The "Brothers Port" was the name be-
queathed to the haven here by the Scan-
dinavians, who settled in Caithness in the
8th and 10th centuries, and it appears
to have been much resorted to by these
" sea-kings," or pirates. On an eminence
here stand the ruins of an ancient chapel.
A sheriff court is held 10 times a year. The
population in 1901 was 2,394 in the eccle-
siastical parish and 609 in the village.
The parish of LATHEBON extends along
the coast from the Ord of Caithness to
Bruan, in the south angle of Wick parish
and is 27 miles in length with a breadth
varying from 10 to 15, and has a good road
along the coast for its whole length. It
contains the villages of Berriedale, Bruan
Dunbeath and Lybster. The parish church
stands about half way between Lybster and
Dunbeath, and there is also one at Lybster
and four United Free churches in the
parish. A cattle fair is held at Lybster
once a fortnight, and a sort of market
for engaging men lor the arduous employ-
ment of the fishing season takes place on
the 2nd July. Cattle fairs are also held at
Dunbeath in March, June, August and
November, dates not fixed, but usually on
the second. Tuesday in the month. Dun-
beath Castle, garrisoned by Montrose in
1650, formerly belonged to a branoh of the
Sinclair family, now represented by Sir
John B. G. Sinclair bart. J. P. of Barrock
House, Wick, Forse House is the residence
of Edward William David Baird esq. The
Duke of Portland K.G., P.C., G.C.V.O. is
the principal landowner. The area of the
civil parish is 19,539 acres; rateable value,
£19,000; the population in 1901 was 5,223
civil, and 1,832 ecclesiastical.
