adjoining is the County Office of Supply.
There is also a custom house. In the
town is an Artillery Volunteer Corps and
a Rifle Volunteer Corps, with a large drill
hall, called the "Victoria Hall," erected
in 1887 in commemoration of the Jubilee
of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria : it
stands on part of the site of the old bowl-
ang green in Bolgam street, and has a
frontage to Kinloch road of about 70 feet.
The Castlehill church occupies the site
•of the ancient royal castle, and was erected
in 1781. The Gaelic church, so named
from the language in which the service is
rendered, was built in 1807, and has a
stone spire, added in 1836. The Episcopal
church of St. Kiaran, in Argyll street,
was opened in 1891. The United Free
church, erected in 1767, and rebuilt in
1874, is an edifice of stone in the Italian
style, with a tower 150 feet in height,
built in 1834. There are two other United
Free churches, one in Lochend and the
other in Lome street. The Roman
Catholic church, opened in 1849, is a neat
.structure, with a carved stone front and
pinnacles.
The most remarkable piece of antiquity
is an ancient cross, erected in the middle
â– of the main street : it stands on an octa-
gonal graduated base of six steps, and
â– consists of a tapering shaft and circular
head, from which the arms of the cross
slightly project : the entire surface is
â– covered with interlaced and foliaged
ornament, elaborately carved. The in-
scription is in the Lombardic character,
and the following is a literal copy, with
the translation annexed :• — HEO EST. :
CRUX: DOMINI : YVABI : M : 'H :
EAOHYRNA. QUONDAM: RECTORIS DE
KYLREGAN. ET : DOMINI: ANDREE :
NATI: EJUS: RECTORIS DE KIL :
COMAN: QUI HANC CRUCEM FIERI
FACIEBAT: " This is the cross of Master
Edward M. H. Eachran, once Rector of
Kylregan, and Master Andrew his son.
Rector of Kilcoman, who erected this
cros3." There is, however, no date, but
is is said to have been executed about the
twelfth century, and to have been brought
from the Isle of Iona: an iron railing in-
â– closes the whole. The market is held on
Monday, and the fairs on the first Thurs
day in February, for horses ; the second
on the last Wednesday in May, for horse;
and cattle ; the Wednesday before the
second Thursday in August, "for sheep and
lambs; and on the second Thursday in the
same month for horses ; and the third
Thursday in November for horses. South
of the town is the high mountain called
Bengoelion, from which there is an exten
sive view of the surrounding country, in
eluding the distant objects of Arran and
Pladda islands, Cowal hills, the bay and
heads of Ayr, the Lowlands as far as
Xoch Ryan, Ailsa Craig, Black Head at
the entrance of Belfast Lough, Dunaverty,
Sanda Isles, part of the Irish coast near
the points of Garroch Head, Red Bay and
Fair Head, the dangerous bay of Machri
hanish, the Mull of Islay and the Paps of
Jura; also the cemetery at Kilkerran, with
â– the points of Saddell, Carradell and Skip-
ness. The Duke of Argyll ; Captain Hectoi
Macneal, of Ugadale ; Richard Campbell-
DavyB esq. of Askomel ; William James
Laidlay esq. of Drumore ; Captain Duncan
Stewart R.N. of Knochrioch; the trustees
of the late John Colville, of Machrihanish ;
Pobert Reid esq. of Killean; Alexander
Fleming esq. of Kilmaho ; Mrs. Jame
Weir, of Balegreggan House, and Neil
McNeill esq. of Ardnacross, are the princi-
pal landowners. The area of the parish
comprises 44,256 acres; rateable value of
the burgh, £39.754, and landward. £24.893,
total, £64,647; the population of the parish
in 1891 was 10,260, and in 1901, 10,236.
including 8,234 in the town, including 4
officials and 46 inmates of Campbeltown
^combination poorhouse. The population of
the royal burgh in 1901 was 5,285; of the
police burgh, 8.2S6; of the parliamentary
burgh, 8,234. The number of voters on
the parliamentary register in 1903 was 787.
MACHRIHANISH, formerly called Salt-
Pans, from salt having been made here
from sea water, is a small village 5^ miles
west of Campbeltown, on the southern
shore of Machrihanish bay; here are the
extensive links of the Machrihanish Golf
Club. Nearly half a mile south is Losset
House, the modern mansion of Hector
Macneal esq. of' Ugadale. At Drumlemble,
ARGYLLSHIEE.
about 4 miles from Campbeltown, are the
works of the Argyll colliery, which are
connected with Campbeltown by a narrow
guuge railway. At KLkerran, on the south
side of the bay, is an ancient burial place
and the remains of an old castle.
