a market town in the civil parish of Mel-
drum, pleasantlv situated on the road
from Aberdeen to Banff, 18 miles north-
west from the former, 27 south-east from
the latter and 5 north-east from Inverurie.
The Great North of Scotland railway has
a branch line here from Inverurie. The
streets and dwellings are irregularly laid
out, but of late have been much improved
Meldrum was constituted a burgh of
barony in the year 1672, under the juris-
diction of two bailies, and was elected a
police burgh in 1893. Meldrum House, the
property of the marriage contract trustees
of Mr. "and Mrs. Garden A. DufE, of Hat-
ton Castle, and now occupied by Maj.-Gen.
Prendergast, for the shooting season, is
romantically situated, and, from its antique
style of architecture, has a striking effect,
arid is surrounded with fine scenery. The
Town Hall has a tower with an illuminated
clock. The North of Scotland Bank
Limited and the Town and County Bank
Limited have each a branch establishment
in the town. The principal branches of
business in the burgh is an extensive dis-
tillery and a brewery. The district is
partly arable and partly pastoral; the soil
of the southern portion is fertile, bub that
of the northern shallow and less fruitful.
Acreage of the parish, 8,102; rateable
value, burghal £3,616, landward £6,365;
population in 1891, 2,019, and in 1901,
