market, 200 feet in length, was built in
1899. The number of sailing and steam
vessels that entered the port with cargoes
and in ballast in 1902 was 7 British of
2,996 tons, and 52 foreign of 15,246 tons.
In the general coasting trade 347 entered
of 45,464 tons, and 313 cleared of 39,094
tonnage. A trade is done in timber, im-
ported from Norway and Sweden, the
other chief imports being coals, salt, white
fi3h &c. while the principal exports are
herrings, grain, empty barrels, fish
manure and oil, potatoes &c. ; there are
also works for the making of machine
tools. The total value of the imports in
1902 was £34,991, sawn wood being the
principal article. Thomas Walker's Hos-
pital, within the burgh, was erected at a
cost of £3,000, on a site given by Lord
Saltoun. It is supported by the Town
Council, and has an endowment of
£1,000 from the Helen Watson Memorial
Fund, under which poor people are
admitted free of charge : there are 25
beds. Dalrymple Hall and Caf6, erected at
a cost of about £6,000, is due to the late
Captain John Dalrymple, who presented
the site, along with a sum of £2,300, for
its erection : in addition to the cafe and
dining rooms, ib has a news room,
museum, school of art, recreation room
and baths, together with a public hall
capable of holding 1,000 people, and the
necessary ante-rooms.
The Public Libraries Act was adopted by
the Town Council in July, 1903, and
Andrew Carnegie esq. of Skibo Castle, has
since given £3,000 for the erection of a
library, on a site presented by Lord
Saltoun.
The parish church, in the centre of the
town, built in 1SQ3, is a plain edifice of
stone, with a clock tower at the west end :
the organ was erected at a cost of £400:
the interior was entirely renovated and ex-
tensive structural alterations made in 1899,
at a cost of £2,000 : there are sittings for
1,050 persons. The hereditary burying
ground of the Eraser family is within the
church inclosure. The west parish church,
built in 1876, is a plain stone building with
tower and spire, containing a bell pre-
sented by Mr. William Whitelaw : there are
480 sittings. The East United Free church,
in Seaforth street, is a structure of granite,
erected in 1880, at a cost of £6,600. The
West United Free church is in Mid street.
The South United Free church, in Saltoun
place, will 3eat 250 persons. St. Peter'3
Episcopal church (Bishop Jolly Memorial),
in Charlotte street, consists of chancel,
nave and aisles, and was consecrated on
August 31, 1892: there are sittings for
500 persons. The Catholic church and
Presbytery in Commerce street, erected in
1895, are of granite: the church has 300
sittings. The Public Schools, erected at a
cost of £7,000, were opened on the 12th
September, 1882, by Lord Saltoun : at the
north end is a tower containing a clock
and a bell ; a large addition was made in
1891 at an expense of £1,300. Fraser-
burgh Academy, built at a cost of £2,500,
and endowed by James Park esq. was
opened in 1870, and in 1894 transferred to
a governing body elected partly by the
School Board and partly by the Town
Council. The Academy, at present the
Secondary School for Fraserburgh, is
leased by the School Board, who are now
the managers. There is also a school be-
longing to the Episcopalians, and an en-
dowed school instituted in 1863, by Miss
Strachen, of Cortes, in memory of her
brother, James Strachen esq. M.D. Inspec-
tor-General of Army Hospitals, Madras ;
this is managed by a body of trustees
composed of the members of the Kirk Ses-
sion and Lord Saltoun's commissioner.
The " Bruce Bequest " of over £40,000,
left by James Bruce, of Inverquhomery
and Longside, is under the control of
trustees; the income, amounting to £1,240
yearly, is distributed to the poor of all the
parishes comprising the Presbytery of
Deer. There are three first-class hotels
here — the Eoyal Hotel, the Saltoun Arms
Hotel and the Station Hotel, in either of
which will be found every convenience.
The market, chiefly for com and cattle, is
held on Tuesday. Area of parish 5,621
acres, of bur^h 333 acres: rateable value,
burghal, £44,731 : lardward, £6,987: popu-
lation of the burgh in 1901 was 9,105, and
the civil parish 9,915, including 107 on
ships in the harbour, and 5,470 in the
ecclesiastical.
BROADSEA, a fishing village, is within
the burgh. A fishermen's hall was also

erected in the village in 1887 by public
subscription.
Techmuiry, a detached portion of Fraser-
burgh parish, has been transferred to
Strichen.
