PORT WILLIAM and MOCHRUM.
PORT_ WILLIAM is a prosperous village in the parish of Moch-
rum, 24 miles n.e. from Stranraer, 15 s.s.e. from Glenluce, and
9 w. from Whithorn, situated on the bay of Luce. The harbour,
thongh not of great extent, is commodious and safe, and from it
large quantities of grain and potatoes are exported to Glasgow,
Liverpool, and other ports on the West coast of England. In the
vicinity is Monreith, the handsome residence and demesne of Sir
Herbert E. Maxwell, Bart, m.p. proprietor of the place. The
mansion, which stands on the bank of a fine lake, commands au
extensive prospect of the bay of Luce, the shore of Galloway, the
Isle of Man, and the coast of Cumberland. Near it is an old castle
surrounded by lofty trees, and contiguous are the remains of the
old parish cnurch, now occupied as a place of sepulchre by the
family of Maxwell, whose ancestors formerly possessed the estate.
The houses in general are very well bnilt, and afford excellent
accommodation for families and tourists during the bathing
season. The principal hotel is the Monreith Arms. The places of
worship are a church each of the Free aud United Presbyterians
There tfre also commodious Board schools. Population in 1881, 755
The parish of Mochrum is about 10 miles in length, and extends
inland between four and five miles. The Castle, or " Old Place " of
Mochrum, surrounded by lakes, is a very ancient and picturesque
building, in an inland part of the parish. It was formerly tho
family seat of the Dunbars, Kuiyhts of Mochrum, but has fur
many years been the property of the Marquis of Bute, who has
made alterations at considerable expense. The village of Mochrum,
which is about a mile and a half from Port William, contains
nothing worthy of mention, except the parish church and a Board
school. Acreage of the parish, 24,1)71 ; population in 1881, 2,315.
