j^I. NIMANS is a considerable Tillage in the parish of its name, about
one mile from Stirling, situate on the road from that town to
trlasgow. The form of the parish is irregular in its extent, but may be
computed at about ten miles from east to west, and about six miles from
north t , south, bounded on the east by the parish of Airth, on the south
by liaroert, Dunipacc, and Denny, on the west by Fintry and Gargun-
rioclc, on the north by the river Forth, which separates it from
.Kincardine, Lecropt, Logie, and Alloa (if a small space occupied by the
parish of Stirling be excepted). It derives its name from the patron
saint of the ancient parish church, the steeple of which still remains,
and is a distinguished curiosity. The church to which this fabric was
formerly attached being used as a powder magazine by the Highlanders
m 174b, was accidently blown up immediately before their retreat to the
north, lhough scarcely one stone of the body of the church was left
upon another, the steeple remained uninjured. The town consists of
one long and rather narrow street, the houses of which are curious and
old-fashioned ; upon many are dates of considerable antiquity, and some
of them have stones upon which various characters and implements are
rudely and grotesquely carved. The dwellings, however, are for the
most part whitewashed, which imparts a lively "appearance to the place ;
and well cultivated grounds and thriving plantations abound in the
vicinity. The places of worship are an Established, a Free, and United
Presbyterian churches. There is also a Board school. St. Ninians has
long been famed for the manufacture of nails ; other staples are the
tanning of leather and the manufacture of Bcrew bolts. Acreage of the
parish, 38.012; population in 1881, 10,423.
Bannockburn is a prosperous manufacturing village in the parish
of St. Ninians, one mile from that place, situate on both sides, but
chiefly on the east bank, of the Bannockburn rivulet, which here runs
through a glen, and after a course of a few miles falls into the Forth.
Few places of its size in Scotland have more rapidly improved of late
years, in consequence of the manufactures that have taken their seat
hero; these consist of tweeds, tartans, and carpets to a considerable
extent. Coal is obtained in the vicinity in great abundance, and a
tannery has been established in the village for a long period. In
this district the country is characterised by long descending braes,
with a northern exposure to the Frith of Forth, and it was
on one of these uplands, between this village and that of St.
Ninians, that was fought on the 24th of June, 1314, the memorable
and decisive battle of Bannockburn, the result of whioh
was the permanent security of the independence of Scotland.
In this conflict the army of the English was defeated with a loss of
thirty thousand men and seven hundred knights. Bruce's forces were
stationed along the front of an eminence called Gillies Hill, and extended
from south-west to north-east, between the farm of Greysteil and the
village of St. Ninians. About half a mile south from the latter, upon
the summit of a commanding elevation called Caldan Hill, is a large
stone, termed the "Bored Stone," having a hole in the top in which the
Scottish king inserted his standard on the day of battle. The height
called the Cat Craig Hill, from which the English king watched the pro-
gress of the battle, has been almost quarried away. About half a mile
from the village of Bannockburn, at Mii.ton, is pointed out the remains
of the miller's house to which James HT. retreated from the battle of
Sauehieburn (fought in 1488), about two miles further to the south-west.
The places of worship are the Established, Free and United Presbyterian
churches. There are two schools in the village, one being under the
Board and the other an endowed school. Two fairs are held in Ban-
nockburn— on the second Tuesday in June and October (old style)
Bannockburn, with Muik, contained in 1871 a population of 2,561 and
in 1881, 4,331. ' '
Cambusbarkon is a village in the parish of St. Ninians, situate one
mile north-west from that plaee, and about the same distance west from
Stirling. Extensive woollen mills, belonging to Messrs. B. Smith and
Son, give employment to the majority of the inhabitants. In the imme-
diate neighbourhood there are also some extensive limekilns. There is
a Free church here, and Board schools were erected in 1875, at a cost of
£4,000. Population returned with the parish.
About three miles from Bannockburn is the village of East Pleah.
containing a hospital for the accommodation of old and indigent men,
more especially soldiers and sailors. Colonel Francis Simpson, of East
Plean, who died in 1831, was the donor, having bequeathed upwards of
£30,000 and an estate for the purpose. The establishment contains
forty-eight inmates, -who are fed, clothed, and have a small allowance of
pocket-money ; the trustees granted the land on which a church has
been erected in connection with the Church of Scotland.
