STIRLINGSHIRE
SLATER'S
AIRTH AND NEIGHBOURHOOD.
AIRTH is an ancient village in the parish of its name, the latter
about 6 miles in length by about 2 in breadth, 27 miles w. from
Edinburgh, between 8 and 9 e. from Stirling, and 6 n.w. from Fal-
kirk, situate on the banks of the Forth, nearly opposite to Kenneth
paus. It was at one period a place of considerable importance, but
iB now greatly docayed. It possesses an Established church, a Free
church, an United Presbyterian church, and an Episcopal church at
Duumore. There are three small ports or harbours on the Forth,
into which vessels of light burthen can outer, and two ferries across
that estuary, at which are boats for the transport of cattle, carriages,
&c. to Alloa, and other places on the Fife side. The Balmon fishery
is prosecuted here with considerable success. Airth Castle, the
property of Colonel Graham, is an elegant mansion, in the pure
Gothic style, and few buildings are superior to it, either in chaste'
Simplicity of architecture or elegance of design. In the parish are
three ancient towers, one at Airth, another at Dunmore, and a
third at Powfoulis ; that at Airth is of very early date, and is called
Wallace's Tower, from the circumstance of that hero having privily
entered the building, slain the captain and one hundred men, and
released his uncle who was a prisoner ; tho tower is still in toler-
able preservation. Some years ago an anchor was found in Dunmore
Hill, at least half a mile from the present course of the river. The
whole parish, with the exception of the hills of Airth and Dunmore,
is a level tract, and the soil rich and well cultivated. Acreage of
Airth parish, 5,477; population in 1881, l,362 r of which the village
contained 487.
