LILLIESLEAF, BOWDEN and MIDLEM.
IILLIESLEAF is a village and parish, the former 10 miles from
i Galashiels, the same distance from Jedburgh, 8 from Hawick, G
from Selkirk, 3 from New Belses station, and 4 from Hassendean
station on the North British Railway. The places of worship consist
of the parish church and an United Presbyterian church. There are
two schools in the village — a Board school and Currie's Female school.
The inhabitants are chiefly employed in agriculture and trades con-
nected therewith. Tho parish, which is four miles in length by
nearly three in breadth, is intersected by the Ale water. The lands
are under good tillage, and the district has a very pleasing appear-
ance. Acreage of the parish, 6,673 ; population in 1881, 718, and of
the village, 815.
Bowden village is 2% miles from Melrose and 1% miles from St.
Boswells Railway station, standing in a low situation, through which |

a rivulet passes to the Tweed. The places of worship comprise tho
parish church, a very ancient building, and a Free church ; there is
also a Board school in the village. The parish comprises a portion
of the Eildon hills, from whence the land gently declines in well
cultivated and enclosed fields. The vestiges of a Roman military
road, with circular stations or encampments, may be traced in this
district, and a ruin at Holydean, at an early period a strong forti-
fication, and the ancient residence of the now noble family of Rox-
hurghe. Within the parish, besides Bowden, is tho small village of
Midholm, or Midlem, pleasingly situated on a rising ground, two
miles from Lilliesleaf. Here is a Board school and a chapel for the
Original Secession. Acreage of Bowden parish, 7,067 ; population in
881, 769.
