Tuesday in every month ; and here also the court of general quarter
session sits. The burgh formerly joined with Haddington, Dunbar,
North Berwick, and Lauder in returning on member to Parliament, but
under the Redistribution Act, is now merged in the County.
The manufacture of tweeds, blankets, plaidings, &c. is carried on
to a large extent, and in the neighbourhood are many corn mills.
Considerable emolument is derived from the sale of the produce of the
orchards and gardens that surround the town. There are place-; of wor-
ship belonging to the Establishment, the Free Church of Scotland, the
United Presbyterian body, Independents, Episcopalians, and Roman
Catholics. In connection with the town flourishes a horticultural
society. The market is held on Tuesday, and the fairs on the first
Tuesday in March, 16th May if Tuesday, If not the Tuesday preceding,
first Tuesday after 2Gth May, 20th July (or two days after St. Bosweli's),
20 August it Tuesday, if not the Tuesday preceding, 25th September,
and servants hiring, first Tuesday in November. Jedburgh parish
comprises an area of 22,535 acres ; the population in 1881 was returned
at 5,147, and the town 3,402 of that number.
Bedrule is a parish in the centre of the county, bounded on the east
by Jedburgh, on the north by Anerum. by Hobkirk on the south, and on
the. west by Cavers. The village of Bedrule consists of the parish church,
school, and a few scattered houses, and is distant from Jedburgh about
four miles. Acreage, 3,917; population in 1881, 269.
Crailing is a parish situate B% miles from Jedburgh and 6% from
Kelso, bounded on the west by Anerum, on the south by Jedburgh, on
the north by Roxburgh, and on the east by Enkfovd. There are two
small villages in the parish, Crailing and Nisbet, The places of
worship and school are at Crailing. The North British Railway inter-
sects the parish, and has a station at Nisbet. Acreage, 5.966; popula-
tion in 1881, 638. «
Hownaji is a parish situate amongst the Cheviot Hills, bounded on
the south by the county of Northumberland, on the ea^t and north by
Morebattle, and on the west by Eckford, Jedburgh and Oxnam. The
village of Hownam is distant from Jedburgh about nine miles, and from
Kelso about twelve. Acreage, 15,075 ; population in 1881, 2,63.
Oxnam is a parish on the borders of Northumberland, bounded on
the east by Hownam, on the north and west by Jedburgh and South-
dean. The village <>f Oxnam is four miles from Jedburgh, which is
the nearest town and railway station. Acreage, 21,160; population in
1881, 683.
Soutiidf.an is a large parish in the southern part of Teviotdale,
bounded on the north by Jedburgh, on the south by Castleton andtne
county of Northumberland, on the west by Hobkirk, and on the east by
Oxnam. The parish church and school are at Chesters, a hamlet in
this parish. Acroage, 27, 929 ; population in 1831, 724.
