RUTHERGLEN,
OR Ruglen, as it is commonly called, Is an ancient royal burgh in
the parish of its name, situate on the line of the Clydesdale Junc-
tion Railway, two miles and a half south-east from Glasgow, and nine
west from Hamilton. The town consists of one principal street with
several smaller ones branching from it ; in its vicinity collieries are
wrought, and chemical and dyeworks are in operation. There are a
few large factories, a paper mill, a pottery, tube works, and a shipbuild-
ing yard, which give employment to a large number of the inhabitants.
The places of worship are an Established church, a quoad sacra church,
an United Presbyterian church, two Free churches, a Roman Catholic
chapel, an Evangelical Union chapel, and one for the Wesleyan
Methodists ; there are also several excellent schools, and an extensive
circulating library. The Town Hall, erected in Main street, at a
cost of nearly seven thousand pounds, is a handsome and spacious
structure, with a large square tower having a clock with three
dials. This fine building can be seen at a great distance, and
adds very much to the appearance of the town. Rutherglen was erected
into a royal burgh in the year 1126, by King David I. ; by his charter
the inhabitants enjoyed many privileges. At that period small crafts
came up the Clyde to Rutherglen quay. Glasgow, however, by its
superior consequence, arising from its trade and manufactures, absorbed
the privileges and engrossed the traffic of this burgh, and the Broomie-
law has for years been the station of almost all oxfcernal commerce The
castle of Rutherglen (which stood in Castle street, but of which* not a
trace now remains) underwent several sieges during the wars of Kine
Robert, and it remained a place of strength until the battle of Lan"-
side, soon after which the Regent Murray, to revenge himself on the
Hamilton family, in whose custody it then was, ordered it to be de-
stroyed. It was in the old church of Rutherglen, that, in the year 1291
Sir John Monteith engaged to betray to the English his friend and
companion, Sir William Wallace. The burgh is governed by a provost
two baihes, a treasurer, and fifteen councillors ; a monthly court is
held; it unites with Dumbarton, Kilmarnock, Port Glasgow and Ren-
frew in sending a representative to the Legislature. Kilmarnock is the
returning burgh. Rutherglen gives the title of earl to the Marquis of
Queensferry. The fairs of this town have been noted for a "reat show
of horses, particularly of the Lanarkshire breed, esteemed the best for
draught in Scotland ; they are held on the first Friday after the 4th of
May ; first Tuesday after tbe 4th of June ; and first Friday after the 25th
of August; first Wednesday and Friday and the Friday after the ^Sth of
November. The parish of Rutherglen, which comprises an area of 2 151
acres, in 1831 contained a population of 13,801, the royal bureh at'tho
same time having 11,473.
