MOTHERWELL,
CARFIN, DALZIEL, NEWARTHILL, NEW STEVENSTON, OMOA, AND CLELAND.
MOTHERWELL is a police burgh and post town, situated for the
greater part in the parish of Dalziel, and middle ward of
Lanarkshire, two miles from Hamil ton, and eleven from Glasgow. Within
the recollection of persons still living, Motherwell had no existence as a
village. Its name is derived from three farms, called respectively High,
Low, and North Motherwell, and these doubtless receive their designa-
tion from an adjoining spring called Ladywell or Mothcrswell. Within
the last few years the progress of Motherwell has been very rapid. It
owes its prosperity in a great extent to the coal mines in its neighbour-
hood. The Glasgow Iron Company's Works, one of the largest in Scot-
land, employ 1,000 workmen. The places of worship comprise, besides
the parish cliurch of Dalziel, one of the Establishment, an E. U.,a Free,
and two United Presbyterian churches, and Primitive Methodist and
Roman Catholic chapels. There are also branches of the Bank
of Scotland, British Linen Co., and the Clydesdale Bank, Limited. The
town is supplied with water from the Clyde, and the streets are lighted
with gas. Motherwell is a principal station and junction on the Cale-
donian Railway. The parish of Dalziel has an area of 3,089 acres, and in
1881 contained n population of 13,853, of which number 12,904 belonged
to Motherwell.

from and hi the postal delivery of Motherwell. Several collieries, a
boiler works, and also a chemical works are in the district, ond there is
also a station on the Caledonian Railway. Population in 1881, 1,428.
Newarthh.l is a village also in the parish of Bothwell, postal
delivery of Motherwell, about two miles and a half distant. The
United Presbyterians have a place of worship here. Population in 1881,
1,355.

distant from Holytown. There is a Free church here.

well, about three miles distant therefrom, and a station on the Cale-
donian Railway. Several collieries, an iron foundry, a boiler works,
four stone quarries and two brick works are the main support of the
district.
