KILBRIDE (EAST),
CARMUNNOCK AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
KILBRIDE (EAST) is a village and burgh of barony in the
parish of its name, situate on the road from Glasgow to Muir-
kirk, eight miles from the former city by road, and ten and three
quarter miles by rail, the like distance n. from Strathaven, between
six and seven s.w. from Hamilton, and forty-five vr. by s. from Edin-
burgh. There is a station here on the Glasgow and East Kilbride
branch of the Caledonian railway. The parish, which comprehends
the abrogated one of Torrance, contains some extensive liraeworks,
and coal also lies beneath the surface. The places of worship are
the parish kirk, the United Presbyterian church, and the Free kirk.
Kilbride has produced several eminent men, among whom are
found Dr. William Hunter, and his brother, Mr. John Hunter, the
celebrated anatomist and physiologist. There are several Board
schools, and one at Maxwelton, a short distance from the town, the
latter endowed by the late Sir Hugh Maxwell, Baronet, of Calder-
wood Castle. A market is entitled to be holden here on Monday.
The cattle show, which is held on the second Friday in June for
Clydesdale horses and Ayrshire cattle, is the only fair that takes
place in East Kilbride. East Kilbride parish, which embraces
22,760 acres, in 1881 contained a population of 8,97-0, of which tho
village possessed 1,118.
The parish of Carmunnock lies on the north-western confines of
the county, on the east bank of the White Cart river, having Kil-
bride on the south and Cambuslang on the east ; it is four miles in
length by three in breadth. The ground is partly arable and partly
pastoral, the banks of the Cart presenting some fine woodland
scenery. On vhe estate of Castlcmilk (the proprietors of which are
supposed to be lineal descendants of the Royal House of Stuart), are
the remains of a Roman military road ; and many tumuli have been
met with, which when opened have always been found to contain
human bones and instruments of war. In the house of Castlcmilk,
which is noted for its fine situation, Mary Queen of Scots is said to
have lodged the night before the battle of Langside. There is a
place of worship for the members of the Established church, and a
Board school. The V ar i an supports its own poor by voluntary
assessment. The nearest railway station is at Busby. Acreage,
3,479 j population in 1881, 722.
