DOUGLAS and RIGSIDE.
DOUGLAS, a village of great antiquity, is 41 miles s.w. from Edin-
burgh, 31 s.s.e. from Glasgow, 15 n. from Lcadhills, 12 s. from
Lanark, and 8 s. from Lesraahagow ; situated nearly in the centre of
the parish, of its name, on the south side of the "Douglas water, and on
the road from Edinburgh to Ayr. The parish of Douglas takes its name
from the stream that flows through it — the British words Dim Glas,
signifying the " dark blue stream," and this is descriptive of the colour
of the water. From such an etymology is derived the once dreaded and
still noble name of Douglas (of this ancient family copious and inter-
esting particulars will be found in Messrs. Chambers' " Gazeteer"). In
the vicinity of the village, on the bank of the river, stands Douglas
Castle, the residence of the Earl of Home, surrounded by extensive
plantations. The old castle of Douglas was burned down in 1760 ; the
following year the present edifice was begun to be erected in a mag-
nificent style, from a plan by the late architect, Adam, but oidy a part
of the original splendid design has as yet been completed. The village
consists of several narrow irregular streets, formed without any regard
to order on uneven ground. Near the centre, in the village burial place,
stands all that remains of the ancient parish church ; in a vault belong-
ing to the original structure are to be seen monuments of some of the
great chiefs of the house of Douglas ; several of these highly merit the
investigation of the curious in sepulchral sculpture. Besides the parish
church, there is a Free church and a United Presbyterian church. There

are three Board schools in the parish, besides one for females, supported
by the Countess of Home. The village is well lighted with gas. The
inhabitants in general are employed in hand-loom weaving for the
Glasgow manufacturers. The Commercial Bank of Scotland, Limited,
and the Royal Bank of Scotland have each a branch establishment here.
The parish throughout is well stored with limestone, freestone, and
coal ; of the latter mineral there are extensive seams, many of which
are seven feet thick. The district is well watered; besides the Douglas
there are three minor streams, which merge in that river previous to its
falling into the Clyde, about seven miles below the village. Fairs are
held on the first Wednesday in February, the third Friday in March,
the first Friday after Whitsuntide, the third Friday in October, and the-
first Friday after Martinmas for hiring servants ; the second Wednesday
in June, for shearers; and the second. Friday in August, for horses, of
which there is always a large show. The parish, which embraces an
area of 34,137 statute acres, had in 18S1 a population numbering 2,641,
of which the town contained 1,262.
Rigside is a small village in the parish of Douglas, four miles north
therefrom, situated on the road from Edinburgh to Ayr. In its neigh-
bom-hood are several collieries, which are worked by James Swann, Esq.,
of Collier Hall. It also abounds with rich and productive beds of iron-
stone, limestone and fire-clay.
