JOHN'S HAVEN, BENHOLM AND ST. CYRUS.
JOHN'S HAVEN is a thriving seaport village in the parish of Ben-
holm, 14 miles s. from Stonehaven, 4 s.w. from Bervie, and 9 n.e.
from Montrose, situated at the bottom of a hill between the coast
road and the Bea, and a little off the main thoroughfare between
Aberdeen and Montrose, 29 miles s. from the former town, and 9 n.
from the latter. It containsan extensivemanufactoryfor sail cloths,
sackings, &c, and there is also a brewery in the village. The parish
of Benholm forms a square of nearly three miles, enclosing an area
of 4,891 statute acres, lying on the shore of the German Ocean,
bounded on the north by Bervie, and on the south by St. Cyrus.
The land is level on the coast, and tlie interior consists of hill and
dale, beueath the surface is deposited good freestone and limestone.
The tower of Benholm before the invention of gunpowder, was con-
sidered a strong place of defence. The places of worship are the
parish kirk, a Free church, and one for United Presbyterians. The
Blontrose and Bervie railway passes through the parish, and has a
station at John's Haven. The parish contained a population of
1,527 in 1881, of which number 1,041 were returned for John's Haven.
St. Cyrus, sometimes called Ecclesgreig, is a parish and village,
the latter situated four miles from John's Haven, between the coast
and the road from Montrose, which passes through the district. The
parish, which measures seven miles in length by three in breadth,

with an area of 8,249 statute acres, lies partly on the sea shore,
having Benholm on the east, Garvock on the north, Marykirk on
the north-west, and the North Esk river washes part of its western
boundary. The places of worship are the parish and Free churches.
There are two schools in the village, the public, and an excellent
industrial school, built and endowed by the late General Straton, of
Kirkside ; this Peninsula and Waterloo hero also left legacies for
the poor of the district. The sea salmon fisheries along the coast
of the parish are very valuable, the yearly rental of wbich amounts
to about £2,500, and the river fishings to about £7.00. The surface
of the parish is pretty level, but intersected with several glens and
rivulets, and is elevated in some places to little hills. More than
three-fourths is arable. The burn in Den Fella forms a beautiful
cascade by falling over a ruck sixty-three feet in height. The
ancient residence of the Barclay family, known by the name of the
Kame of Mathers, stands in ruins on a peuinstilated rock, the base
of which is washed by ihe sea. The castles of Morphio and Lauris-
ton are also ancient buildings. The parish contains limestone
quarries and plenty of excellent freestone. St. Cyrus is a station
on the Montrose and Bervie line. The population of the parish in
1881 was 1,487, of which number 542 were returned for the village.
