BOLESKINE WITH ABERTARFF,
AND THE VILLAGES OF FORT AUGUSTUS, URQUHART AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
BOLESKINE with ABERTARFF is an united parish, twenty- four
miles in length, and from ten to twelve in breadth, stretching
along from the Pass of Inverfarigaig on the south side of Loch Ness
to the east end of Loch Oich, embracing the great Glen of
Stratherrick, FoyerB, the famed Falls of Foyers, aud the village
of Fort Augustus, which latter stands on the western extremity of
Loch Ness, and on the south bank of the Caledonian Canal, thirty
miles north-east of Fort William and thirty-five from Inverness.
This fort, with Fort George on the Moray Firth, and Fort William,
are within the county of Inverness, the three forming a line of
fortresses which were erected to overawe the Highlanders. The Pass
milo up the Pass is erected a rustic monument in memory of
Dr. Bryce, a noted geologist, who was killed whilst in pursuit of his
studies. The Falls of Foyers are about three miles from Inver-
farigaig, the road passing along the shores of Loch Ness. Near the
lower Falls is the General's Hut (now a large hotel) called after
General Wade, who constructed most of the roads in the Highlands.
In the village of Fort Augustus are places of worship for members
of the Established and Free churches, together with a Roman
Catholic monastery, erected on the site of the old barracks at Fort
Augustus. There are also Established churches at Boleskine,
Glen Urquhart, and. Invermoriston. The parish in 1881 had a
population of 1,448.
of Inverfarigaig is about two miles long, and at some parts is so
narrow as to barely permit of the construction of a road. About a
POST OFFICE, Fort Augustus, George Douglas, Post Master.— Letters from all parts arrive (from Inverness) at 7 p.m., and are
despatched thereto at 6 a.m. Money Order and Telegraph Office and Savings Bank.
